Our Compassion Journey

A year ago today we received our first letter from our Compassion International child Suzet.
"My dear sponsor, shikamoo. Praise the Lord Jesus....I am thankful for your support....At home we live in peace and love....Thank you."

The letter told us all about her family. We were thrilled to get that first letter and read it many times, excited at the opportunity to have an impact on the young girl's life. What I was unprepared for though was the impact she would have on us.

We knew to expect infrequent correspondence from Suzet but we faithfully wrote twice a month. Imagine our surpise when the letters started rolling in. Nineteen letters in the course of twelve months to be exact! Along with the nineteen letters came three extra photos. One photo showed what Suzet was able to buy with a monetary gift we sent. Another showed what she purchased with her birthday money that was sent. The third showed her wearing the Nebraska shirt and holding other goodies that we sent along with a Compassion International sponsor who took a trip to Tanzania!

Sometime in the course of the last year it hit me. Compassion works! Because of Suzet and her amazing Compassion project, Joshua and I felt compelled to do more. We are now proud sponsors to six beautiful children; seven counting Lijomon who graduated the program three months ago (He's now in seminary and teaching students at the project).

These kids are the reason I am so passionate about Compassion. And there are many many more children just like them, living in conditions that you and I cannot fathom.

For them, Compassion means a hot meal, a safe place to be a kid and a place to be loved on. It provides them an opportunity to rise above their circumstances and help change their community for the better. These kids have dreams just like our own. Will you help them make their dreams a reality?
